Akoma offers a wide range of cultural services to community, educational institutions, non-profit organizations, corporations and other special events. Akoma performs for school assemblies grades K-12, providing a journey of the African Drum and percussion. Members of Akoma take you on a musical journey blending poly-rhythmic lush vocals and dance, bring to life the cultural connections to West. African, African American, Afro-Cuban and the Afro-Brazilian experiences.
Akoma also has a collaboration with the Ezinwenne Children's Dance Troupe, that allows us to work with and support children aged 6-17.
Do you work with children or adolescents who are socially challenged? We have programs that cater to clients with different backgrounds. we focus on connecting people through the medium of drumming and getting them to work harmoniously together. It's all about integration and connection. We have had success in San José's High Schools and Juvenile Corrections Facility.
African Drumming Classes for Special Needs Groups Disability Workshops
We have experience working with children and adults with all kinds of abilities. Whether it be a one off treat for your team or an ongoing long-term program. We have drums for them to play and we will bring lots of other shakers. We can also offer a little African dance if some of the participants are up for it.
Aged Care Facilities
A great way to bring a group together in a fun filled session where everyone can participate and make great music. Particularly popular with Grandparents and Grandchildren play dates where everyone plays together.
A baccalaureate service is a celebration, which honors a graduating senior class from a college or high school. The service is held within a few ceremony. Speeches are often intermixed with musical performances, drama, and worship. Baccalaureate services can range in length from under half an hour to as long as four hours.
Celebrating Kwanzaa, an African/African American and Pan-African holiday that celebrates family, community, and culture.
Harambee and Significant Celebrations
Harambee means "all pull together" in Swahili. This event also serves to honor, celebrate and recognize accomplishments intermixed with musical performances drama and worship. The focus is on the achievements of the group.
Dogon Mask Making
Make Paper Mache Masks with your students. This event also serves to honor, celebrate and recognize African culture and is perfect for Black History Month and other class studies that pertain to West African History and Culture. Can also be part of a class drum and dance program.
